Knights Templar Tour:
Tomar & Almourol Castle

About This Tour

Eight Centuries of History — Privately, at Your Pace

The Templar heartland of Central Portugal is one of the most historically charged landscapes in the country — and one of the least discovered by international visitors. This private full-day tour takes you from the UNESCO Convento de Cristo above the medieval town of Tomar to Almourol Castle, a 12th-century Templar fortress rising from a rocky island in the middle of the Tagus River, reached only by boat.

Your guide collects you between 08:00 and 09:00 from your Central Portugal hotel — Leiria, Fátima, Batalha, Tomar, Coimbra, or anywhere nearby. The morning is spent at the Convento de Cristo, the greatest Templar monument in Portugal, layered with Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline architecture built across five centuries. After a leisurely lunch in Tomar's riverside old town, a short drive and a boat crossing brings you to Almourol Castle — surrounded by still water and silent woodland, an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Portugal.

Tour Highlights

Six Experiences That Define This Tour

Convento de Cristo — UNESCO Templar Headquarters

The spiritual and military headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal — a UNESCO World Heritage fortress-convent built in the 12th century and expanded over five centuries. The circular Romanesque Charola, four cloisters, defensive towers, and the famous chapter house window form one of the most extraordinary buildings in the country. Visiting with a private guide means you understand what you're looking at, not just see it.

The Manueline Window — Portugal's Most Famous Detail

The chapter house window of the Convento de Cristo is the masterpiece of the Manueline style — an explosion of maritime motifs, armillary spheres, coral, ropes, and anchors carved in stone. It appears on the Portuguese 20-escudo note and in person it simply stops you in your tracks. Once your guide decodes every symbol, the window reads like a statement of imperial ambition cut into stone.

Santa Maria do Olival — Where Grand Masters Rest

A plain Romanesque church holding one of Portugal's most significant secrets: the burial tombs of the Templar Grand Masters. Known as the "mother of all overseas churches" — it was from here that the Templar church network spread to every Portuguese territory in Africa, Brazil, and Asia. Dating from around 1160, it predates much of the Convento de Cristo. Most visitors to Tomar walk straight past it.

Almourol Castle — Fortress on a River Island

Built by the Templars in 1171 on a rocky island in the Tagus — reachable only by boat — Almourol's white towers rising from the water as you approach is one of those arrival moments that stay with you permanently. Remarkably well preserved, it later inspired the 16th-century chivalric romance Amadis de Gaula, and the views from the keep tower are some of the finest in Central Portugal.

Tagus River Boat Crossing

The crossing is part of the experience — watching the castle emerge from its rocky base surrounded by reeds and slow current is the moment most visitors describe as the highlight of the day. The Tagus at Almourol is wide, calm, and extraordinarily beautiful — the castle reflected in still water, the wooded riverbanks silent. A short crossing, and a long memory.

Lunch in Tomar's Old Town

An unhurried riverside medieval town of stone bridges, mill wheels, and whitewashed squares — one of Central Portugal's most beautiful. Lunch here means Ribatejo tradition: river fish, slow-braised meats, and local wines. The Church of São João Baptista, the riverside gardens, and the Nabão mill wheels are all within easy walking distance of the best restaurants.

All six highlights are part of the standard itinerary. Interested in adding the Ribatejo wine country, the Templar town of Castelo de Almourol, or the Roman ruins at Conimbriga? Just ask — we can build in almost any combination around your interests and time.

Your Day, Step by Step

Full-Day Itinerary

Your guide collects you from your hotel in Central Portugal between 8:00 and 9:00 AM — the exact time is agreed in advance to suit your plans. The sequence below follows a deliberate logic: the Convento de Cristo is best in the morning before the coach groups arrive; Almourol is best approached in the quieter afternoon hours when the light falls golden on the water. All timings are approximate — this is a private tour, not a timetable, and every stop can be extended or adjusted to suit your group.

This itinerary adapts entirely to you.

Already visited the Convento de Cristo on a previous trip? Want to spend two hours at Almourol instead of one? Prefer to skip Tomar's old town and detour to a Ribatejo wine estate instead? Every element of this day can be adjusted before departure — or changed on the spot by your guide. Personalisation is part of the service, and there is never an extra charge for it.

Convento de Cristo — UNESCO World Heritage Site

Nothing quite prepares you for the scale of it. Your guide walks you through the circular Charola — the Templar oratory modelled on the Holy Sepulchre, where knights heard Mass on horseback — the Manueline cloisters added by King Manuel I, and the famous Manueline window: carved maritime symbolism that captures Portugal's 16th-century world dominance in stone. Entry included.

Church of Santa Maria do Olival — The Templar Burial Church

A modest Romanesque exterior — but historically extraordinary. Built around 1160 as the funerary chapel of the Knights Templar Grand Masters, the source from which the Templar church network spread to every Portuguese territory overseas: "Mother of the Overseas Churches." The Gothic tomb niches of the Grand Masters line the walls in near-silence.

Lunch in Tomar's Medieval Old Town

A riverside grid of whitewashed houses and café-terraces overlooking the Nabão — the kind of Portuguese small city most visitors never find. Your guide recommends the best options, from caldo verde at a counter to Ribatejo lamb or river eel at one of the old tascas. Add our Premium Lunch for a reserved table with wine pairing.

Almourol Castle — Templar Island Fortress

A white-towered castle on a rocky island in the middle of the Tagus — surrounded by reeds and woodland, entirely silent. The approach from the water, watching the keep grow larger above you, is one of the day's defining moments. Built by the Knights Templar in 1171, Almourol is one of the most evocatively sited castles in the Iberian Peninsula. Entry and river crossing included.

Optional Add-Ons

These extras can be added when you get in touch to book. Each one is fully arranged by us — simply mention which you'd like and we'll take care of everything.

Premium Riverside Lunch in Tomar

A reserved table at a handpicked restaurant in Tomar's old town — a genuine Ribatejo tasca with river views and a short, seasonal menu rooted in local tradition. Typical dishes include caldeirada de enguias (Tagus eel stew), roast kid from the Ribatejo hills, and freshwater fish from the Nabão River. Your guide joins you at the table. Coffee and dessert are included, along with a carafe of local wine. No queuing, no guessing — just a proper Portuguese lunch in one of Central Portugal's most overlooked towns.

+€40/ person

Includes starter, main course, dessert, coffee, and house wine or soft drink.

Ribatejo Wine Tasting at a Local Quinta

The Ribatejo plain — the fertile valley the Templars farmed to fund their military campaigns — is one of Portugal's oldest wine regions, yet it remains largely unknown to international visitors. A short detour on the return from Almourol brings you to a family-owned quinta where you'll taste three to four wines made from native varieties including Fernão Pires and Castelão, paired with local charcuterie. Your guide frames the wines in the context of the landscape and the Templar history that surrounds the region. A quiet, unhurried tasting with real depth behind it.

+€30/ person

Includes guided tasting of 3–4 wines with charcuterie accompaniment. ~45 minutes.

Templar Underground: Cisterns & Secret Passages

The Convento de Cristo hides much of its most compelling history below ground. This extended guided visit takes you into the subterranean Roman cisterns beneath the castle — one of the largest and best-preserved in Portugal — and through the labyrinthine service passages and hidden chambers built by the Templars and expanded by the Order of Christ. Standard visits miss almost all of this. Your guide unlocks the underground sections and explains what each space was used for, bringing the daily life of the medieval order into vivid focus.

+€25/ person

Includes extended access to underground sections of the Convento de Cristo complex. ~45 minutes additional.

Almourol Sunset — Stay for the Golden Hour

If your schedule allows, there are few things in Central Portugal more memorable than Almourol Castle at sunset. The white towers turn amber against a darkening sky, the river goes mirror-still, and the whole scene takes on the quality of a painting. This add-on extends your time at the river by roughly one hour so you can watch the light change from the bank, take photographs without rushing, and make the most of one of the most atmospheric viewpoints in the country before beginning the return to Lisbon.

+€15/ person

Extends riverside time at Almourol by ~1 hour. Best from late spring through early autumn.

The tour is suitable for most ages with moderate mobility. The Convento de Cristo involves some uneven stone floors and stairways, and Almourol Castle has steep internal steps to the keep tower — though the castle grounds themselves are accessible without climbing. We naturally adapt pace and commentary to every group. For families with young children, we recommend letting us know in advance so we can plan rest stops and adjust the day accordingly.
