Serra da Estrela
& Portugal's Highest Peaks

About This Tour

Portugal from the Top Down — Privately, at Your Own Pace

Serra da Estrela is Portugal's mountain secret — the highest range in mainland Portugal, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and a landscape so different from the coast it feels like another country entirely. This private full-day tour takes you from your Central Portugal hotel to the 1,993m Torre summit, through the extraordinary glacial valley of the Zêzere, and to an artisanal farm where Portugal's most celebrated PDO cheese is made by hand.

Your guide picks you up between 08:00 and 09:00 and heads straight into the Serra's southern flank, climbing through the historic wool city of Covilhã to the ski plateau and then the Torre at the summit. A long, unhurried afternoon follows: down into the glacial valley, a proper mountain lunch in Manteigas, a visit to the cheese farm, and a stop at the medieval walled town of Belmonte — birthplace of the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral, who put Brazil on the map.

Tour Highlights

Six Experiences That Define This Tour

Torre Summit — The Highest Point in Mainland Portugal

At 1,993 metres, the highest ground in mainland Portugal. On a clear day, the views extend across the entire Central Portuguese landscape and in some conditions reach the Atlantic coast. In winter the plateau is under snow — one of the only places in Portugal where you can walk on a proper mountain snowfield, a completely unexpected experience in a country more associated with sunshine and beaches.

Glacial Valley of Zêzere — Ice Age Landscape

One of the finest examples of glacial geomorphology in the Iberian Peninsula — a deep U-shaped valley carved by a glacier that retreated 10,000 years ago, with polished granite walls, moraines, and glacial erratics still in place. Your guide stops at the best viewpoints to explain how the landscape was formed. This is one of those places that changes the way you see the rest of the country.

Manteigas — A Mountain Village in the Glacial Valley

Nestled at the bottom of the Zêzere valley at 775 metres, Manteigas is one of the most atmospheric villages in Central Portugal — schist houses with green window frames, the sound of the river constant. This is where you stop for lunch, and where the Serra reveals its gentler, more human side. The village is largely unchanged from fifty years ago and the restaurants are genuinely local.

Serra da Estrela Cheese — Portugal's Most Prized PDO Cheese

Portugal's most celebrated artisanal cheese — a soft, semi-liquid wheel of raw ewe's milk curdled with thistle flower, aged in cold stone cellars. PDO status means it cannot legally be made anywhere else. At the farm you see the entire process and taste three stages of maturation. This is the kind of food experience that converts people who thought they didn't like cheese.

Covilhã — The City Built on Wool

Perched on the mountain's southern flank at 700 metres, Covilhã was for centuries the "Manchester of Portugal" — the centre of its textile industry. Its historic wool factories, some now repurposed as university buildings, ground the mountain experience in human history. Covilhã was also home to Pêro da Covilhã, who reached Ethiopia and India by land long before Vasco da Gama's sea route.

Belmonte — Birthplace of the Man Who Discovered Brazil

Pedro Álvares Cabral was born here in 1467 and led the expedition that reached Brazil in 1500. Belmonte's compact historic centre — medieval castle, Romanesque chapel, well-preserved Jewish Quarter — is an extraordinary place to end the day. The town's Jewish community maintained their faith in secret for over 500 years after the Inquisition, only emerging publicly in the 1970s; the Jewish Museum tells that story with great care.

All six highlights are included in the standard itinerary. Want to spend more time at the glacial valley than the summit? Prefer to skip Belmonte and have a longer lunch in Manteigas? Interested in adding a sheep farm visit or a winter snow experience? Tell us — the day is fully adaptable to your interests, at no extra charge.

Your Day, Step by Step

Full-Day Itinerary

Your guide collects you from your hotel in Central Portugal between 8:00 and 9:00 AM — timing is agreed in advance. From most Central Portugal towns (Coimbra, Leiria, Fátima, Covilhã), the Serra is 1 to 1.5 hours away, allowing a civilised start. All timings below are approximate guides; the route, pace, and stops are fully flexible. The itinerary is designed to reach the summit before midday (when mountain weather can shift) and return via the lower valley in the afternoon.

This itinerary adapts entirely to your group.

The route, the pace, and the stops are all flexible. Want to spend more time at the Torre and less in Covilhã? Prefer to linger longer at the cheese farm? Would you like to add the sheep farm visit or the winter snow experience? Interested in walking a section of the Zêzere valley rather than viewing it from above? Simply tell us when you get in touch — every itinerary we build is personalised to the people taking it.

Optional Add-Ons

These extras can be added when you get in touch to book. Each one is fully arranged by us — simply mention which you'd like and we'll take care of everything.

Serra da Estrela Cheese Tasting Flight

Upgrade from the welcome tasting to the full flight — three wheels of Serra da Estrela cheese at different stages of maturation, tasted side by side with local sourdough bread, chestnut honey, and a glass of regional Serra da Estrela white wine. The guide explains the differences between fresh, semi-cured, and fully aged Serra cheese, and you leave understanding why this PDO product is considered among the finest cheeses in southern Europe. A 40-minute experience that transforms a sample into a genuine understanding of the craft.

+€22/ person

Includes three Serra da Estrela cheese stages, regional bread, honey, and a glass of Serra wine.

Winter Snow Experience at Penhas da Saúde

Available November to March (snow permitting), this add-on gives your group dedicated time at the Serra's snow-covered ski plateau before the ascent to Torre. Equipment for sledging down a short slope is arranged in advance; the guide prepares hot chocolate from a thermos at the viewpoint. For families with children especially, the experience of standing in deep winter snow in Portugal — something most tourists never know exists — makes for one of the most unexpectedly joyful moments of a Portugal trip. The Torre views in fresh snow are extraordinary.

+€25/ person

Seasonal add-on (November–March, snow-dependent). Includes sledge equipment and hot chocolate. Children especially love this.

Bordaleira Sheep Farm Visit & Cheese-Making Demo

Before visiting the cheese farm, stop at the working sheep farm where the Bordaleira ewes are kept. A 30-minute guided visit introduces you to the breed that makes Serra da Estrela cheese possible — hardy, woolly, and uniquely adapted to the mountain climate. The farmer demonstrates the hand-milking process (seasonal), shows you how the thistle flower is prepared as a curdling agent, and explains the centuries-old traditions behind one of Portugal's most important agricultural heritage products. An experience that gives the subsequent cheese tasting a completely different depth of meaning.

+€30/ person

30-minute farm visit before the cheese farm. Fully arranged by us with a local farming family.

Belmonte Jewish Museum & Quarter Guided Visit

Belmonte's Jewish community is one of the most remarkable survival stories in European history. After the Inquisition forced Portuguese Jews to convert or flee in 1497, Belmonte's community maintained their Jewish identity in secret for over 500 years — passing down prayers, rituals, and identity through the women of each household, entirely hidden from the outside world. They only emerged publicly in the 1970s. The Museu Judaico de Belmonte tells this story with extraordinary care. A guided visit through the museum and the old Jewish Quarter takes approximately 45 minutes and remains with visitors long after the day is over.

+€15/ person

Includes museum entry and guided tour of the Jewish Quarter. ~45 minutes.

Why is Serra da Estrela priced higher than other Central Portugal tours? Even from Central Portugal, the Serra is a remote mountain destination — the road to the summit takes time, the day is longer, and the combination of sites (summit, glacial valley, cheese farm, medieval Belmonte) requires a full 8–10 hours with your guide. The price reflects that depth and the genuine exclusivity: very few private operators offer this tour, and virtually no group tours do it at all.

How to book: send us a WhatsApp message or email with your preferred date, group size, and any add-ons or requests. We'll confirm within a few hours. No platform, no hidden fees — direct with your guide from message one.
