Fátima, Batalha
& Alcobaça

Three UNESCO Monasteries — One Extraordinary Private Day

About This Tour

Where Portugal's Faith, Victory, and Royalty Are Written in Stone

Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one private day — and stories powerful enough to permanently reshape how you see Portugal. The Fátima Sanctuary, Batalha Monastery built to honour a battlefield vow in 1385, and Alcobaça, where the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro face each other across the nave so that on the Day of Resurrection, the first thing each sees will be the other.

Your guide meets you at your Central Portugal hotel between 08:00 and 09:00. The route is carefully sequenced: Fátima in the morning quiet, then Batalha for the Gothic pinnacles and the Unfinished Chapels, lunch at a traditional regional restaurant, and finally Alcobaça for the soaring Cistercian nave, the Royal Kitchen with a river running through it, and the story of Pedro and Inês at the foot of the tombs.

Tour Highlights

Three Monuments, Six Unforgettable Experiences

Fátima

Fátima — One of the World's Greatest Pilgrimage Sites

One of the most visited Catholic sanctuaries in the world — the vast esplanade, longer than St Peter's Square in Rome, leads to the Basilica and the intimate Chapel of Apparitions marking the exact spot of the 1917 visions. The collective sincerity of this place is unlike anything else in Europe, and deeply moving regardless of your own beliefs.

Batalha

Batalha — A Gothic Masterpiece Built From a Battlefield Vow

Built to fulfil a battlefield vow made before Aljubarrota in 1385 — where Portugal's outnumbered army defeated Castile and secured national independence — Batalha is widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements of late Gothic architecture anywhere in the world. Its intricately sculpted portals, soaring nave, and extraordinary Royal Cloister have few equals in Europe.

Batalha

The Unfinished Chapels — Open to the Sky Since 1533

The octagonal royal pantheon commissioned in the 15th century was never completed and has stood open to the sky ever since. The entrance doorway — a riot of Manueline stonework considered one of the most elaborately carved surfaces in the Iberian Peninsula — frames nothing but open air above. Standing inside the roofless rotunda is genuinely unforgettable.

Alcobaça

Alcobaça — The Oldest Cistercian Monastery in Portugal

Founded in 1153 and one of the most complete Cistercian complexes in the world, Alcobaça's great nave — soaring to 20 metres with bare, unadorned stone walls — is immediately, almost shockingly vast. Few interior spaces in Portugal produce such a powerful first impression. Entry is included and your guide covers the full history.

Alcobaça

The Tombs of Pedro I and Inês de Castro

King Pedro I and Inês de Castro lie in opposing transepts, positioned face to face so that on the Day of Resurrection the first sight each sees will be the other. The tombs are masterpieces of 14th-century stone carving. Your guide tells the full story — her murder on royal orders, his brutal revenge — a tragedy that inspired poets for six centuries.

Alcobaça

The Royal Kitchen — A River Runs Through It

In the 14th century, the monks diverted a channel of the River Alcoa directly through their kitchen — delivering live fish on demand, cooling the room, and powering a roasting spit. The channel still flows through today, making it one of the most extraordinary functional spaces to survive from medieval Portugal and consistently the detail visitors remember longest.

Everything above is included in the standard day. Already visited Fátima? Prefer to spend longer at Alcobaça? Want to add Óbidos' medieval walls or Nazaré's clifftop above Portugal's giant waves? This is your private tour — every stop, every pace, every route is shaped around what matters most to your group.

Your Day, Step by Step

Full-Day Itinerary

Your guide meets you at your hotel in Central Portugal, typically between 08:00 and 09:00 — agreed in advance when you book. The route below is carefully sequenced: Fátima's morning atmosphere is uniquely peaceful before the midday crowds arrive; Batalha's Gothic stonework is at its most dramatic in the mid-morning light; Alcobaça makes the perfect unhurried afternoon. All timings are approximate guides, never rigid schedules. This is your private tour — every element can be adjusted, extended, or replaced based on your interests and energy on the day.

Everything here is a suggestion, not a fixed schedule.

Want to spend the whole morning at Batalha and move quickly through Fátima? Prefer to skip a site you've already visited and add Óbidos or Nazaré instead? Interested in the history but prefer a slower pace with longer stops and fewer rush decisions? All of this can be arranged before departure — just tell us when you get in touch. There is never any extra charge for personalising the day.

Fátima — The Sanctuary & Basilica

A vast esplanade — longer than St Peter's Square — leads to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Chapel of Apparitions, marking the spot where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917. On most mornings pilgrims from across the globe are present, kneeling, carrying candles. Whether you visit as a believer or traveller, the collective sincerity is impossible to ignore.

Your guide takes you through the Royal Cloister, the Founder's Chapel where João I and his English queen lie side by side, and the Unfinished Chapels: a vast octagonal rotunda open to the sky, its doorway one of the most ornately carved surfaces in the Iberian Peninsula. The Royal Kitchen, where a medieval channel of the River Alcoa still runs through the room, is one of the most extraordinary spaces in Portuguese heritage. Entry included.

Optional Add-Ons

All extras are arranged by us — simply mention which you'd like when you get in touch to book. Óbidos is available as a complimentary route stop at no extra charge; all other add-ons are priced as shown.

Premium Regional Lunch

A reserved table at one of our handpicked traditional restaurants in the Batalha or Alcobaça area — typically a proper adega or tasca with regional character. The menu features the Central Portugal classics: bacalhau à lagareiro or bacalhau com broa, slow-roasted cabrito, regional sheep's and goat's cheeses, and the celebrated doces conventuais sweet pastries with a long monastic heritage. Your guide joins you at the table. Coffee and dessert included.

+€45/ person

Includes starter, main course, dessert, coffee, and a carafe of regional wine or soft drinks.

Nazaré — Giant Waves & Fishing Village

A 25-minute drive from Batalha, the clifftop Sítio neighbourhood overlooks Praia do Norte — the beach where, in November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara rode a 78-foot wave and set the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed. Even on a calm day the scale of the cliffs is extraordinary. Below, the colourful village of Nazaré still shows off its fishing heritage. Add this 90-minute coastal detour for one of Portugal's most dramatic Atlantic experiences.

+€25/ person

Adds approximately 1.5–2 hours to the day. Best combined with morning Fátima and Batalha, before heading south to Alcobaça.

Óbidos Medieval Village

The perfectly preserved medieval village of Óbidos, entirely enclosed by its 14th-century stone walls, sits just off the motorway on the return south to Lisbon — making it a natural and effortless route stop. Walk the ramparts, taste ginja cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup (a local tradition invented here), and explore whitewashed lanes that have barely changed in five centuries. This stop adds approximately 45 minutes to the day.

No extra charge

Available on request when you book — just let us know you'd like to include it.

Tomar Extension — A Fourth UNESCO Treasure

For those who want to go further: add the Convento de Cristo in Tomar — the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal, later the Order of Christ, and one of the most significant medieval fortresses in the Iberian Peninsula. The Charola (the Templar's circular oratory) and the extraordinary Manueline window are among the most celebrated images of Portuguese architecture. Tomar is 30 minutes from Batalha, making it a natural extension of the Central Portugal Heritage Trail. This add-on transforms the day into a comprehensive journey through 800 years of Portuguese heritage.

+€35/ person

Adds 2–3 hours to the day; tour becomes approximately 11–12 hours. Entry to Convento de Cristo included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, 100%. Every tour we operate is exclusively private. You will never be joined by people you have not met. The vehicle, the guide, and the entire day belong to your group alone — from hotel pickup to drop-off.
Pickup is between 08:00 and 09:00 — the exact time is agreed in advance when you book, and can be adapted to your group's preferences. Once you contact us, we confirm your precise pickup time in our reply. All timings throughout the day are approximate and adjust to your agreed start.
Yes — we collect from anywhere in Central Portugal (Batalha, Alcobaça, Leiria, Nazaré, Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha, Tomar, Fátima, or any hotel in the region) as well as from Lisbon and Greater Lisbon. Staying in Central Portugal has a real practical advantage: the drive to the first stop is short (20–45 minutes rather than 90), and the same complete tour fits into around 6–8 hours rather than 9–10. Just tell us where you're staying when you get in touch and we'll confirm your pickup time and expected return.
Absolutely. While Fátima's atmosphere moves visitors of every background and belief — including confirmed non-believers — if you've already visited or would simply prefer to spend more time at Batalha and Alcobaça, we reshape the day around that entirely. You might spend an extra hour at the Unfinished Chapels, add a Nazaré detour to see the giant wave beach, or simply arrive at Batalha earlier and explore at a more leisurely pace. Just tell us your preference when you book. There is no extra charge for adjusting the itinerary.
All three sites are active religious or heritage sites and require that shoulders and knees be covered. A light scarf or wrap works perfectly over a sleeveless top or shorts — easy to tuck into a day bag and pull out when needed. Both Batalha and Alcobaça have wraps available to borrow on site, but bringing your own is simpler. Comfortable, flat walking shoes are strongly recommended — all three sites involve walking on stone floors and cobblestones, particularly the long esplanade at Fátima and the cloisters at Batalha.
Yes, very much so. The walking involved across all three sites is mostly flat and easy — the monasteries are spacious with smooth stone flooring, and Fátima's vast esplanade is fully wheelchair accessible. Children typically find the experience very engaging: the story of the three young shepherd children at Fátima, the scale and drama of Batalha's Gothic architecture, and the medieval love story of Pedro I and Inês de Castro at Alcobaça are particularly vivid for younger visitors. We naturally adapt pace, depth of commentary, and stop duration to suit every group.
Yes — all three are available. Óbidos is a free route extension (it sits naturally on the return south to Lisbon, adds about 45 minutes, and costs nothing extra). Nazaré — the clifftop above Portugal's famous giant wave beach — is +€25 per person and adds 1.5–2 hours; it works best in the morning before heading south to Alcobaça. The Tomar Templar fortress (Convento de Cristo) is +€35 per person, adds 2–3 hours, and completes what is arguably the finest single-day Central Portugal heritage circuit available. Just let us know which you'd like when you get in touch.
These are Fátima's two great pilgrimage dates, when several hundred thousand pilgrims from around the world converge on the sanctuary. The atmosphere — candlelight vigils the night before, processions, the sheer scale of collective faith — is something many visitors describe as one of the most extraordinary experiences of their lives. If you're open to crowds and moved by collective human expression of belief, these dates can be deeply memorable. If you prefer a quieter, more contemplative visit, any other date of the year is equally suitable — and the sanctuary is calm and accessible at your own pace.
Lunch is not included in the standard price. Your guide will recommend excellent local restaurants in the Batalha or Alcobaça area — traditional tascas and adegas with regional dishes at all price points. The Central Portugal table is particularly good: bacalhau à lagareiro, slow-roasted cabrito, regional cheeses, and the celebrated doces conventuais sweet pastries made to recipes from the monastic kitchens. If you'd prefer a reserved table with a curated menu, wine, and the guide joining you at the table, our Premium Regional Lunch add-on (+€45/person) takes care of everything.
We recommend booking at least 3–5 days in advance to secure your preferred date, especially in peak season (April–October). That said, last-minute bookings are often possible — just send us a message and we'll do our best to accommodate you. Cancellation policy: free cancellation — cancel more than 48 hours before the tour and you pay nothing. Cancel within 48 hours and we refund 95% of your payment (5% admin fee only). No-shows are non-refundable. Please see our Quality & Cancellation Policy for full details.
