Fátima, Batalha
& Alcobaça
Three UNESCO Monasteries — One Extraordinary Private Day
Where Portugal's Faith, Victory, and Royalty Are Written in Stone
Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one private day — and stories powerful enough to permanently reshape how you see Portugal. The Fátima Sanctuary, Batalha Monastery built to honour a battlefield vow in 1385, and Alcobaça, where the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro face each other across the nave so that on the Day of Resurrection, the first thing each sees will be the other.
Your guide meets you at your Central Portugal hotel between 08:00 and 09:00. The route is carefully sequenced: Fátima in the morning quiet, then Batalha for the Gothic pinnacles and the Unfinished Chapels, lunch at a traditional regional restaurant, and finally Alcobaça for the soaring Cistercian nave, the Royal Kitchen with a river running through it, and the story of Pedro and Inês at the foot of the tombs.
Three Monuments, Six Unforgettable Experiences
Fátima — One of the World's Greatest Pilgrimage Sites
One of the most visited Catholic sanctuaries in the world — the vast esplanade, longer than St Peter's Square in Rome, leads to the Basilica and the intimate Chapel of Apparitions marking the exact spot of the 1917 visions. The collective sincerity of this place is unlike anything else in Europe, and deeply moving regardless of your own beliefs.
Batalha — A Gothic Masterpiece Built From a Battlefield Vow
Built to fulfil a battlefield vow made before Aljubarrota in 1385 — where Portugal's outnumbered army defeated Castile and secured national independence — Batalha is widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements of late Gothic architecture anywhere in the world. Its intricately sculpted portals, soaring nave, and extraordinary Royal Cloister have few equals in Europe.
The Unfinished Chapels — Open to the Sky Since 1533
The octagonal royal pantheon commissioned in the 15th century was never completed and has stood open to the sky ever since. The entrance doorway — a riot of Manueline stonework considered one of the most elaborately carved surfaces in the Iberian Peninsula — frames nothing but open air above. Standing inside the roofless rotunda is genuinely unforgettable.
Alcobaça — The Oldest Cistercian Monastery in Portugal
Founded in 1153 and one of the most complete Cistercian complexes in the world, Alcobaça's great nave — soaring to 20 metres with bare, unadorned stone walls — is immediately, almost shockingly vast. Few interior spaces in Portugal produce such a powerful first impression. Entry is included and your guide covers the full history.
The Tombs of Pedro I and Inês de Castro
King Pedro I and Inês de Castro lie in opposing transepts, positioned face to face so that on the Day of Resurrection the first sight each sees will be the other. The tombs are masterpieces of 14th-century stone carving. Your guide tells the full story — her murder on royal orders, his brutal revenge — a tragedy that inspired poets for six centuries.
The Royal Kitchen — A River Runs Through It
In the 14th century, the monks diverted a channel of the River Alcoa directly through their kitchen — delivering live fish on demand, cooling the room, and powering a roasting spit. The channel still flows through today, making it one of the most extraordinary functional spaces to survive from medieval Portugal and consistently the detail visitors remember longest.
Everything above is included in the standard day. Already visited Fátima? Prefer to spend longer at Alcobaça? Want to add Óbidos' medieval walls or Nazaré's clifftop above Portugal's giant waves? This is your private tour — every stop, every pace, every route is shaped around what matters most to your group.
Full-Day Itinerary
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Central Portugal, typically between 08:00 and 09:00 — agreed in advance when you book. The route below is carefully sequenced: Fátima's morning atmosphere is uniquely peaceful before the midday crowds arrive; Batalha's Gothic stonework is at its most dramatic in the mid-morning light; Alcobaça makes the perfect unhurried afternoon. All timings are approximate guides, never rigid schedules. This is your private tour — every element can be adjusted, extended, or replaced based on your interests and energy on the day.
Want to spend the whole morning at Batalha and move quickly through Fátima? Prefer to skip a site you've already visited and add Óbidos or Nazaré instead? Interested in the history but prefer a slower pace with longer stops and fewer rush decisions? All of this can be arranged before departure — just tell us when you get in touch. There is never any extra charge for personalising the day.
Private Pickup from Your Hotel
Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby anywhere in Central Portugal in a comfortable, air-conditioned private vehicle. The drive to the first stop is short — typically 20–45 minutes — giving you time to settle in and share any preferences before the tour begins.
Fátima — The Sanctuary & Basilica
A vast esplanade — longer than St Peter's Square — leads to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Chapel of Apparitions, marking the spot where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917. On most mornings pilgrims from across the globe are present, kneeling, carrying candles. Whether you visit as a believer or traveller, the collective sincerity is impossible to ignore.
Batalha Monastery & the Unfinished Chapels
King João I's vow before the Battle of Aljubarrota — the greatest building in Central Portugal. Your guide takes you through the Royal Cloister, the Founder's Chapel where João I and his English queen lie side by side, and the Unfinished Chapels: a vast octagonal rotunda open to the sky, its doorway one of the most ornately carved surfaces in the Iberian Peninsula. Entry included.
Lunch at Leisure — or Upgrade with a Reserved Table
The region is known for bacalhau à lagareiro, slow-roasted cabrito, regional cheeses, and the celebrated doces conventuais sweet pastries with a long monastic heritage. Your guide recommends the best nearby restaurants at every price point. For a pre-reserved table with a curated regional menu and wine, add the Premium Regional Lunch when you book.
Alcobaça Monastery — Tombs, Cloisters & the River Kitchen
Founded 1153 — the nave soars to 20 metres without a single pillar, bare walls austere by Cistercian rule. At the far end: the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro. The Royal Kitchen, where a medieval channel of the River Alcoa still runs through the room, is one of the most extraordinary spaces in Portuguese heritage. Entry included.
Óbidos — A Medieval Village Untouched by Time
Entirely enclosed within its original 14th-century walls — whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, cobblestone lanes free of traffic. Walk the ramparts for views over the valley and stop for a ginja cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup. Available at no extra charge — just let us know when you book.
Return to Your Hotel
Your private vehicle returns you to your hotel anywhere in Central Portugal — typically around 15:30–17:00, depending on your start time and the stops included. Add approximately 45 minutes if you've included the Óbidos stop. Your guide will give you a realistic estimate of the return time at the start of the day.

Premium Regional Lunch
A reserved table at one of our handpicked traditional restaurants in the Batalha or Alcobaça area — typically a proper adega or tasca with regional character. The menu features the Central Portugal classics: bacalhau à lagareiro or bacalhau com broa, slow-roasted cabrito, regional sheep's and goat's cheeses, and the celebrated doces conventuais sweet pastries with a long monastic heritage. Your guide joins you at the table. Coffee and dessert included.
Includes starter, main course, dessert, coffee, and a carafe of regional wine or soft drinks.
Nazaré — Giant Waves & Fishing Village
A 25-minute drive from Batalha, the clifftop Sítio neighbourhood overlooks Praia do Norte — the beach where, in November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara rode a 78-foot wave and set the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed. Even on a calm day the scale of the cliffs is extraordinary. Below, the colourful village of Nazaré still shows off its fishing heritage. Add this 90-minute coastal detour for one of Portugal's most dramatic Atlantic experiences.
Adds approximately 1.5–2 hours to the day. Best combined with morning Fátima and Batalha, before heading south to Alcobaça.
Óbidos Medieval Village
The perfectly preserved medieval village of Óbidos, entirely enclosed by its 14th-century stone walls, sits just off the motorway on the return south to Lisbon — making it a natural and effortless route stop. Walk the ramparts, taste ginja cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup (a local tradition invented here), and explore whitewashed lanes that have barely changed in five centuries. This stop adds approximately 45 minutes to the day.
Available on request when you book — just let us know you'd like to include it.
Tomar Extension — A Fourth UNESCO Treasure
For those who want to go further: add the Convento de Cristo in Tomar — the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal, later the Order of Christ, and one of the most significant medieval fortresses in the Iberian Peninsula. The Charola (the Templar's circular oratory) and the extraordinary Manueline window are among the most celebrated images of Portuguese architecture. Tomar is 30 minutes from Batalha, making it a natural extension of the Central Portugal Heritage Trail. This add-on transforms the day into a comprehensive journey through 800 years of Portuguese heritage.
Adds 2–3 hours to the day; tour becomes approximately 11–12 hours. Entry to Convento de Cristo included.
