Alentejo Wine Estates
& Vinho de Talha
The Alentejo in a Glass — Two Estates, Two Thousand Years of Tradition
The Alentejo produces some of Portugal's most celebrated wines — and one extraordinary tradition found nowhere else on earth: Vinho de Talha, made in the same Roman clay amphorae used in this region for over 2,000 years. This private full-day tour puts those wines at the centre of the day, pairing each glass with the cellars, the landscape, and the people who make them.
Pickup is from your Alentejo accommodation — Évora, Estremoz, or any agreed meeting point in the region. The morning is spent at a premier Alentejo estate: a guided cellar tour through barrel rooms and cork oak groves, then a sit-down tasting of four to five wines paired with local charcuterie. After an unhurried lunch, the afternoon takes you to a specialist Vinho de Talha producer, where you will taste wild, mineral amphora wines whose character cannot be found anywhere outside this small corner of southern Portugal.
The whole experience is built around your group's pace, preferences, and curiosity. Already know the standard varietals and want to focus on Talha exclusively? Want to add an olive oil producer or a black pork tasting? Have a particular estate in mind? Just tell us when you get in touch and we'll build the day around it.
Six Reasons This Tour Is Unlike Any Other
Two Premier Alentejo Wine Estates
You will visit two carefully selected estates — one internationally acclaimed producer with outstanding cellars, and one Vinho de Talha specialist. Both are private, guided, and unhurried. No queues, no shared groups, no time pressure.
Vinho de Talha — The World's Only Amphora Wine DOC
Alentejo is the only wine region on earth with a protected designation of origin for amphora wine. The clay talha vessels — some centuries old — produce wines with a wild, mineral character that no stainless steel tank or oak barrel can replicate. This is a 2,000-year Roman tradition, still alive today.
A Long, Unhurried Estate Lunch
This is not a tour where lunch is rushed. Whether at an estate restaurant with views over the vineyards, or at a traditional Alentejo adega chosen by your guide, the midday meal is a central part of the experience — migas, porco preto, sheep's cheese, and the local wine poured generously.
Cork Oak Groves & Vineyard Walk
The Alentejo produces around 50% of the world's cork. A walk through the estate's montado — the UNESCO-recognised cork oak savanna — provides a perspective on the landscape that no other region in Europe can offer. Slow, quiet, and beautiful.
Guided Tastings with Food Pairing
At the first estate, a structured sit-down tasting of four to five wines with local charcuterie, cheeses, and seasonal accompaniments. At the Talha estate, a focused tasting of three amphora wines. All guided — your guide explains each wine's story, grape variety, and how the terroir of the Alentejo expresses itself in the glass.
Entirely Built Around Your Group
Have a favourite estate you've read about? Prefer to skip one tasting and spend more time walking the vineyards? Want to add a visit to a local olive oil press or a sheep's cheese producer? There is no fixed script here — just tell us what matters to your group and we'll shape the day accordingly.
No two tours are ever the same. The estates, tasting focus, lunch venue, and pace are all adjusted before departure based on your group's interests, dietary requirements, and any estates you already know or want to visit specifically. Just mention it when you get in touch.
A Sample Itinerary — 6 to 7 Hours
Your guide meets you at your accommodation in the Alentejo region — typically between 09:00 and 09:30, agreed in advance. The route and estate selection are confirmed with you before the day. All times below are approximate guides, not fixed schedules. This is a private tour and it moves at exactly the pace you set — linger over a tasting for as long as you wish, skip anything you'd prefer not to do, and add anything that interests you.
The estates visited, the tasting formats, the lunch venue, and the overall order of the day are all decided in conversation with you before departure. Already been to one of the estates on a previous trip? Want to focus exclusively on Vinho de Talha? Prefer a more relaxed pace with extra time at the vineyard? Travelling with non-drinkers who'd enjoy the landscape and food equally? Just let us know — the day is shaped entirely around your group, at no extra charge.
Private Pickup from Your Alentejo Accommodation
Your guide collects you from your hotel, quinta, or any agreed location in the Alentejo — Évora, Estremoz, Elvas, or the countryside in between. A brief introduction to the day's route and the two estates. The first is typically 30–45 minutes from most Alentejo accommodation.
Premier Alentejo Wine Estate — Cellar Tour & Guided Tasting
One of the Alentejo's finest wine estates, set in rolling countryside among vineyards and cork oak woodland. A guided cellar tour covers the fermentation tanks, barrel ageing room, and bottling hall, followed by a vineyard and montado walk. The morning closes with a sit-down tasting of four to five wines paired with local charcuterie and cheese.
A Long Alentejo Lunch — Estate or Traditional Adega
Lunch at the estate restaurant or a traditional Alentejo adega. The Alentejo table is the most celebrated in Portugal: açorda alentejana, borrego assado from the wood oven, or secretos de porco preto grilled over charcoal. Queijo de Évora and house olives arrive as a matter of course. Wine flows at your pace.
Vinho de Talha Specialist — The 2,000-Year Amphora Wine Cellar
Vinho de Talha is made in terracotta amphorae — a technique Roman in origin. Grapes ferment naturally with wild yeasts on the skins; no temperature control, no sulphites, no filtering. The result is genuinely unlike anything else: wild, alive, mineral, and honest. You taste three amphora wines in the cellar itself. Alentejo holds the only DOC designation for amphora wine in the world.
Return to Your Accommodation
Your guide returns you to your accommodation — or continues to Monsaraz for the afternoon light over Alqueva if you've added the Sunset Extension. There is no fixed closing time; if a conversation at the second estate runs long, there is no rush to leave.

Artisan Olive Oil Mill & Tasting
The Alentejo is as celebrated for its olive oil as its wine. Add a visit to a local artisan producer — see cold-pressing in action if timing allows, learn the difference between monocultivar and blended oils, and taste premium Alentejo extra-virgin olive oils alongside local bread and fleur de sel. A 45-minute detour that many guests describe as one of the day's most memorable moments.
Best combined with the Talha estate visit. Your guide arranges the producer visit in advance.
Black Pork Tasting Platter
Porco preto — Iberian black pork raised on acorns in the Alentejo oak forests — is one of the great culinary experiences of Portugal. Upgrade your lunch with a curated tasting platter of the finest cuts: secretos (the hidden cut between shoulder and ribs), pluma (soft neck), and presa (tender shoulder) — each grilled simply, seasoned with fleur de sel and Alentejo olive oil. The pork equivalent of a premium wine tasting.
Pre-arranged with the lunch venue. Available at most estate restaurants and traditional adegas in the region.
Alqueva Sunset Extension
End the day at Monsaraz — the perfectly preserved medieval village perched above the Alqueva reservoir, the largest artificial lake in Western Europe. Arrive in the late afternoon, walk the ancient walls, and watch the sun set over the water below as the village turns gold and the shadows lengthen toward Spain. The Alqueva is also a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve — if you stay into the evening, the stars are extraordinary.
Adds approximately 1.5 hours to the tour. Drop-off at your accommodation follows the sunset. Best in spring, autumn, and summer evenings.
Harvest Experience (September–November)
If your tour falls during the Alentejo's vendimia — the grape harvest from late August through October — we can arrange for your group to participate: harvesting by hand in the vineyard rows, delivering the grapes to the lagares, and if timing and the estate allow, joining the traditional pisa das uvas (foot-stomping). A deeply immersive, earthy, joyful experience that connects you directly to the wine you've been tasting all day.
Seasonal — available late August through October. Subject to estate availability and harvest timing. We confirm in advance when you book.
