Benagil Cave, Carvoeiro
& Silves Castle
The Central Algarve's Greatest Contrasts — Sea Cave, Clifftop Village & Moorish Fortress
The central Algarve holds three of the region's most extraordinary experiences — and this private full-day tour brings them together in a single seamless day. You will see the Algarve from inside a domed limestone sea cave, from the edge of golden cliffs above the Atlantic at Carvoeiro, and from the battlements of the most beautiful Moorish fortress in Portugal at Silves.
Your guide picks you up from your Algarve resort between 08:00 and 09:00. The morning belongs to the coast: the clifftop boardwalk at Carvoeiro, then a small boat along the golden cliffs and through the entrance arch of the Benagil Cave — accessible only by water, its circular skylight open to the sky. After seafood lunch in Carvoeiro or along the Arade river in Ferragudo, the afternoon turns inland to Silves Castle, the finest Moorish fortress in Portugal, rising from the orange groves in deep red sandstone.
The whole day is built around your group's pace, preferences, and curiosity. Want to spend longer at the sea caves and skip Silves? Prefer to add a swim at Benagil beach or explore a different coastal grotto? Already been to Silves and want to swap in Ferragudo village or the Arade riverside instead? Just tell us when you get in touch and we'll shape the day entirely around what matters most to your group — at no extra charge.
Six Experiences That Define This Tour
Algar de Benagil — Inside the Cathedral Cave
Portugal's most iconic natural wonder is a sea cave with a vast domed limestone ceiling and a circular opening to the sky — a natural oculus above a crescent of sand accessible only by water. From inside, looking up at the circle of blue sky through sixty metres of sculpted rock, the sense of scale is extraordinary. A moment that stays with every traveller who experiences it.
Benagil Cliff Coast — A Boat Ride Through Golden Arches
The coastline between Lagoa and Carvoeiro is a series of golden limestone sea stacks, arched rock bridges, and hidden grottos carved by the Atlantic over millions of years. Your boat follows the cliff line at water level, revealing formations entirely invisible from above — and the colour of the water here, turquoise over white sand, is unlike anything further east along the coast.
Carvoeiro Boardwalk — Clifftops Above the Sea
A flat clifftop boardwalk threading through limestone formations above the sea caves at the eastern end of Carvoeiro village — fins, arches, and towers sculpted by Atlantic wind and wave in the same warm gold that defines this stretch of coast. Your guide will take you to the viewpoints above the cave openings that give the best perspective on the formations below.
Silves Castle — Portugal's Finest Moorish Fortress
Built from deep red sandstone, this is the most complete and best-preserved Moorish castle in Portugal — the Moors made Silves the Algarve's capital for four centuries, and the ambition shows. Eight towers rise from walls enclosing an area larger than many medieval town centres, a vast cistern survives underground, and the views over orange groves and the Serra de Monchique are some of the finest in the south.
Silves Cathedral & the Moorish Old Town
The Gothic Cathedral of Silves was built in the 13th century on the site of the former Great Mosque — parts of the original Moorish structure survive inside. The old town around it has a quiet character unlike the beach resorts: orange trees, the Arade river curving below the hill, and the covered market beside the Roman bridge where local produce is sold.
Carvoeiro Village & Central Algarve Seafood
A horseshoe cove of pale sand backed by whitewashed houses, with terraced seafood restaurants looking directly out to sea. Lunch here — grilled bream, clams in white wine, fresh percebes from the rocks — is one of those Algarve experiences that makes everything else seem somehow less real. Your guide recommends where to eat; you choose what and how long.
All six experiences are included in the standard itinerary. Want to spend longer at the cave coast and less time at Silves? Prefer to add a swim at Carvoeiro beach or explore a different sea grotto? Already been to Silves and want to substitute Ferragudo village or the Arade river instead? Just tell us — this is your private tour and every decision belongs to your group.
Full-Day Itinerary
The day starts with pickup from your Algarve resort hotel — typically between 08:00 and 09:00, with the exact time confirmed in advance when you book. All timings below are approximate and shift with your agreed start time. The boat trip to Benagil is tide and weather dependent — your guide will confirm conditions the morning of the tour and, if the sea is rough, will offer the best available alternative (kayak, paddleboard, or a different cave accessible from the clifftop). Silves is best in the afternoon when the light warms the red sandstone — which is why the itinerary is structured this way.
This is a fully private tour and every aspect of the day is adjustable before or during. Want to add a swim at Praia de Benagil after the boat trip? Want to skip Silves and spend the whole day on the coast instead? Interested in the Roman bridge and Moorish hammam at Silves? Want to end at Ferragudo with its fishing boats and castle instead of returning directly? Tell us at any point — we'll make it work.
Private Pickup from Your Algarve Resort
Your guide meets you in your Algarve resort hotel lobby for a door-to-door pickup — from Albufeira or Vilamoura, approximately 35–40 minutes to Carvoeiro; from Portimão or Alvor, around 20–25 minutes. The drive through orange groves and cork oak countryside is already a different side of the Algarve from the beach strip.
Carvoeiro Village & Tabuleiro Boardwalk
The flat Tabuleiro de Carvoeiro boardwalk threads through golden limestone formations above the sea caves at the eastern headland. On clear days the circular skylight of Benagil is visible from the clifftop, two kilometres east. Below, the village square, fishing harbour, and terrace cafés looking over the cove make a perfect start to the morning.
Benagil Beach & Boat Trip into the Cave
Your guide pre-arranges the boat — you simply walk down to the beach and board. The 30–40 minute trip heads east along the golden cliff face past sea arches and hidden grottos, then through the narrow entrance arch into the Algar de Benagil's cathedral chamber: a vast limestone dome with a circular skylight open to the sky above a crescent of sand.
Praia de Benagil — Swim & Clifftop Viewpoints
Benagil beach is small, sheltered, and has some of the clearest water on the Algarve coast — worth a swim if you brought a swimsuit. The clifftop above provides the best external views of the cave's skylight opening. Stay as long as you like; the schedule easily absorbs an extra half-hour here.
Lunch — Carvoeiro Seafood or Ferragudo Riverside
Carvoeiro's terrace restaurants above the cove serve freshly caught bream, sea bass, and clams with the Atlantic directly in view. Alternatively, Ferragudo's riverside fish restaurants on the Arade offer a quieter, more local atmosphere and some of the best caldeirada (fish stew) in the region. Your guide recommends the right spot for your group.
Silves Castle — The Red Sandstone Moorish Fortress
Silves Castle is the best-preserved Moorish fortification in Portugal: deep red sandstone curtain walls almost entirely original, eight towers intact, and the vaulted underground cistern still impressive after a thousand years. Your guide explains the full Moorish period — the importance of Chelb as a cultural capital and the Christian reconquest of 1189. Entry is included.
Silves Cathedral, Old Town & Riverside
Below the castle, the Gothic Cathedral — built on the site of the former Moorish mosque — has a quiet, austere interior with a Manueline doorway that surprises with its elegance. The old town around it is unhurried and authentic: the orange tree-lined square, the Arade riverside, the covered market, the old Roman bridge. The Silves Wine Tasting add-on takes place here.
Return to Your Algarve Resort
Your guide drives you back to your resort hotel. Portimão and Alvor guests arrive by approximately 16:40; Albufeira and Vilamoura guests by approximately 17:00–17:15. With the Sunset & Ferragudo Evening add-on, arrival is approximately 20:30–21:00. The day ends at your door, with the evening still ahead of you.

Optional Add-Ons
These extras can be added when you get in touch to book. Each one is fully arranged by us — simply mention which you'd like and we'll take care of everything.
Private Boat Charter Upgrade — Exclusive Vessel to Benagil
The standard Benagil boat trip uses a small local fishing boat shared with other passengers from the beach. The Private Boat Charter upgrade gives your group an entirely exclusive vessel — just you, your guide, and the captain — for the full coastal trip and cave visit. This means you can spend longer inside the Benagil chamber, explore additional sea grottos along the cliff, and stop at the smaller caves that standard trips skip. The difference in experience — particularly for photography — is significant. Available for groups of 2 to 8 people. Subject to availability; book in advance.
Minimum 2 people. Approximately 60–75 minutes on the water. Subject to sea conditions and advance booking.
Kayak Experience at Benagil Sea Caves
For those who want to reach Benagil under their own power, a guided kayak experience can be added to the morning programme. Departing from Benagil beach, you and your group paddle along the cliff wall and into the cave — a completely different sensory experience to the motor boat trip. You can stop inside the cave for as long as you wish, paddle into the smaller chambers accessible only by kayak, and exit at your own pace. Suitable for adults and children aged 12+ with basic swimming ability. A wetsuits and buoyancy aids are provided.
Approximately 90 minutes. Requires basic swimming ability. Subject to sea conditions and advance booking.
Silves Wine Tasting — Algarve's Hidden DOC
The Lagoa DOC is one of Portugal's oldest designated wine regions, yet almost entirely unknown outside the Algarve. The warm, dry climate and the region's calcareous limestone soils produce wines of distinctive character — full-bodied reds from Negra Mole and Aragonez, crisp aromatic whites from Síria and Arinto, and a celebrated local medronho brandy distilled from arbutus berries. A curated tasting of four Algarve wines with local accompaniments (dried figs, almond cakes, regional charcuterie) takes place at a Silves producer or wine shop of character. Your guide narrates throughout. An experience most Algarve visitors never know exists.
Approximately 45 minutes. Takes place at the Silves old town stop. Includes 4 wines with regional accompaniments.
Ferragudo Fishing Village & Castle
On the opposite bank of the Arade from Portimão, Ferragudo is a fishing village that has somehow retained its character entirely intact — narrow whitewashed lanes, a small harbour with painted boats, a 16th-century castle on the headland, and fish restaurants where the catch arrives directly from the boats outside. Less visited than Carvoeiro and completely different in character, it makes an excellent end to the day — particularly if you are staying in the Portimão or Alvor area and want to finish somewhere close to home. Add-on includes a short guided walk through the village lanes, time at the harbour, and castle views.
Adds approximately 60 minutes to the tour. Recommended for guests staying in Portimão, Alvor, or Ferragudo area.

Practical Information
Meeting Point
Your Algarve resort hotel lobby. We collect from Albufeira, Vilamoura, Armação de Pêra, Portimão, Alvor, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, and all major Algarve resort areas.
What to Wear
Bring swimwear if you plan to swim at Benagil beach. Comfortable walking shoes for Carvoeiro boardwalk and Silves Castle. Sun hat and high-factor sunscreen are essential June–September. A light layer for the boat trip — it is cooler on the water.
Suitable For
All groups, families, and ages. The boat trip requires stepping onto a small vessel at the beach — manageable for most people in calm conditions. Silves Castle has some steps and uneven surfaces. Children are warmly welcomed throughout.
Best Season
Year-round. The sea cave coast is best May–October when seas are calmer and water temperature is warmest (18–22°C). Summer is busiest at Benagil beach — earlier starts avoid the crowds. Winter and spring offer dramatic Atlantic light and completely empty cliffs. Silves is beautiful in every season.
