Sintra & Cascais the Way They Were Meant to Be Seen — Privately, Without the Crowds
Sintra's palaces look as though they were lifted from a fairy tale — and reaching them before the tour buses arrive makes all the difference. This private full-day tour pairs the UNESCO hilltop with Cabo da Roca and the Atlantic riviera of Cascais, collected from your door wherever you are staying across the Greater Lisbon area.
Pickup from your hotel is between 08:30 and 09:00. The morning focuses on the palaces — Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira — while the village is still quiet. After lunch in the historic centre, the afternoon follows the dramatic coastline to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, before ending in the charming seaside town of Cascais.
Six Experiences That Define This Tour
Pena Palace — A Fairy Tale Above the Clouds
Rising from the forested peaks of the Serra de Sintra, Pena Palace is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Europe — a riot of colour, towers, and Romanticist fantasy perched above the clouds. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the undisputed centrepiece of any Sintra visit.
Quinta da Regaleira — Tunnels & Mysteries
Part palace, part secret garden, part initiatic labyrinth. Quinta da Regaleira is unlike anywhere else in Portugal — its grounds are riddled with underground tunnels, spiral initiation wells that descend deep into the earth, and symbolism drawn from Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and Rosicrucian philosophy. Extraordinary.
The Moorish Castle — Medieval Ramparts & Panoramas
Built by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries and reconquered by Afonso Henriques in 1147, the Moorish Castle's ancient battlements offer a sweeping panorama across the Serra de Sintra, the Atlantic, and on clear days all the way to Lisbon. A genuinely atmospheric stop above the tree line.
Sintra Historical Village — UNESCO Streets
The historic centre of Sintra — pastel-coloured manor houses, the twin chimneys of the National Palace rising above the rooftops, azulejo-tiled walls and cobbled lanes — is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape in its own right. Your guide knows the quiet corners that most visitors walk straight past.
Cabo da Roca — The Edge of Europe
At 140 metres above the Atlantic, Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe — the point where, as the poet Camões wrote, "the land ends and the sea begins." Standing at the cliff edge with nothing but open ocean ahead of you is one of those moments that puts everything into perspective.
Cascais — The Atlantic Riviera Town
Once the summer retreat of Portuguese royalty, Cascais is today a beautifully preserved Atlantic town with a yacht-filled marina, sweeping sandy beaches, a charming old town of whitewashed buildings and flower-lined streets, and some of the finest seafood restaurants on the Estoril Coast. The perfect way to close the day.
All six highlights are included in the standard itinerary. Already visited Pena Palace? Prefer to skip a stop and spend longer at another? Want to add Monserrate Palace or the Palácio Nacional de Sintra? Just tell us — the day is yours to shape, at no extra charge.
Full-Day Itinerary
Your tour begins with a private pickup from your hotel between 08:30 and 09:00 — agreed in advance with your guide, wherever you are staying in the Greater Lisbon area. The order below is deliberate: Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are best experienced in the morning before the coach tours arrive; Cascais is most enjoyable in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the crowds thin. All timings are approximate — this is your private tour, and the pace is always yours to set.
Every aspect of this tour can be adjusted before departure — skip stops you've already seen, spend longer where you love it, add the Palácio Nacional de Sintra or Monserrate Palace, or simply let your guide follow your lead on the day. There is no extra charge for personalising the itinerary. Just tell us what matters to your group when you get in touch.
Private Pickup from Your Hotel
Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby across the Greater Lisbon area. The drive to Sintra takes about 40 minutes from Lisbon; shorter from Sintra or Cascais. Your guide uses the journey to introduce the Serra de Sintra, its royal history, and the UNESCO heritage that makes it unlike anywhere else in Portugal.
Pena Palace — Above the Clouds
A Romanticist masterpiece of coloured towers, drawbridges, and ornate Manueline and Moorish detail commissioned by King Ferdinand II in the 1840s. From the highest terraces on a clear day you can see Lisbon, the Tagus estuary, and the open Atlantic. Arriving early is the key to experiencing this without the crowds — your guide times the arrival deliberately. Interior entry is available as an add-on.
Quinta da Regaleira — Into the Underground
Built at the turn of the 20th century by an eccentric millionaire, Quinta da Regaleira is saturated with esoteric symbolism — spiral wells descending nine levels into the earth, underground tunnels connecting grottos and chapels, and secret passageways throughout the grounds. Your guide decodes the symbolism and brings the mystery to life in a way no audio guide ever could.
Sintra Village & Lunch at Leisure
Your guide walks you through the cobbled streets past the twin chimneys of the National Palace and recommends the best lunch spots at every budget — from a traditional tasca to one of Sintra's celebrated pastry shops for the famous travesseiros and queijadas. For a reserved table at a handpicked restaurant, add the Premium Lunch option when booking.
Moorish Castle — Battlements Above the Forest
Walking the ancient battlements — built between the 8th and 9th centuries — you look down over the forest canopy and across to Pena Palace on the opposing peak. Your guide explains the conquest of 1147 and the military significance of this ridge. A brief but deeply atmospheric stop.
Cabo da Roca — The Edge of Continental Europe
140 metres above the Atlantic, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Endless open ocean to the west, the Serra de Sintra behind you, the coastline curving north and south. Your guide shares how this cliff was the last sight of land for the sailors setting out for unknown worlds. A moment that stays with you.
Cascais — Riviera Town on the Atlantic
One of the most charming towns on the Portuguese coast. Your guide leads you through the old town and down to the yacht-filled marina and wide seafront promenade. Time to browse the market square, have a coffee by the waterfront, or simply sit and watch the Atlantic. Your guide recommends dinner spots before the return to Lisbon.
Return to Your Hotel in Lisbon
Your private vehicle takes you back to your hotel — roughly 15–20 minutes to Sintra or Cascais, 30–40 minutes to central Lisbon. Your guide suggests dinner options for the evening. You'll arrive back with the day's light fading and Sintra's silhouette still in your mind.

Optional Add-Ons
These extras can be added when you get in touch to book. Each one is fully arranged by us — simply mention which you'd like and we'll take care of everything.
Pena Palace Interior — Full Entry
Take the tour inside the palace walls and explore the extraordinary State Rooms — the Arab Room with its intricate stucco ceilings, the kitchen preserved exactly as it was in royal use, the hunting trophies, the Manueline chapel, and the private apartments of the Portuguese royal family. A remarkable time capsule from the 19th century that most visitors only see from the outside. Entry is arranged by your guide in advance.
Includes interior entry ticket. Adds approximately 45–60 minutes to the Pena stop.
Premium Lunch in Sintra Village
A reserved table at one of our handpicked restaurants in the historic centre of Sintra — a proper sit-down lunch with a curated menu of seasonal Portuguese dishes: grilled sea bass or bacalhau à Brás, slow-braised meat options, and a vegetarian menu always available. The guide joins you at the table. Sintra's restaurants fill up quickly in season — a reserved table makes all the difference.
Includes starter, main course, dessert, coffee, and a carafe of house wine or soft drinks.
Sintra Wine & Pastry Tasting
Sintra has its own DOC wine region — the Colares — producing some of Portugal's most unusual wines from sandy coastal soils that are among the few in Europe never touched by phylloxera. Combined with a guided tasting of Sintra's famous pastries — the flaky travesseiros filled with egg cream and almond, and the traditional queijadas de Sintra — this is a delicious half-hour stop that gives you a real taste of the region.
Includes wine tasting (3 varieties) and a selection of traditional Sintra pastries.
Cascais Beach Stop — Praia da Rainha
If the weather is right and your group is up for it, your guide can take you to Praia da Rainha — the Queen's Beach — a beautiful sheltered cove right in the heart of Cascais that was the private bathing spot of the Portuguese royal family. A perfect final stop on a warm day before heading back to Lisbon: clear Atlantic water, fine sand, and the old town just steps away.
No extra charge — just let us know when booking and we'll add it to the afternoon plan.

Practical Information
Meeting Point
Your hotel or accommodation anywhere in Sintra, Cascais, Lisbon, or the surrounding Greater Lisbon area — including Estoril, Oeiras, and Almada. We come to you — no rushing to a bus stop or meeting point.
What to Wear
Comfortable walking shoes are essential — Sintra's terrain is hilly and the palace grounds involve uneven cobblestone paths. Bring a light layer; the Serra de Sintra is often cooler and mistier than Lisbon, even in summer.
Suitable For
Families, couples, solo travellers, and seniors. Children absolutely love Pena Palace and the underground tunnels of Quinta da Regaleira. Moderate walking required — some uphill sections at the palaces.
Weather & Crowds
Sintra runs year-round. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of weather and manageable crowds. In peak summer, the early morning start is essential — your guide times arrivals to stay ahead of the tour buses. In the event of exceptional weather, the tour will be rescheduled at no penalty.
